PE days for Summer term: Wednesday and Friday
The Year 4 Classroom
This Summer term, our learning will be organised into a range of exciting and enriching topics. In our history work we will explore 'Women Who Changed History', where children will learn about influential figures such as Ada Lovelace, the Suffragettes, and Noor Inayat Khan, among others. We will focus on their achievements and consider the lasting impact they have had on society. In geography, our topic will be 'Navigating the Outdoors', where children will develop their orienteering and map-reading skills, building confidence in understanding directions and using maps effectively.
Alongside this, in the second half of the summer term, we will begin preparing for our Shakespeare performance. Children will learn about the life and times of William Shakespeare and explore his influence on literature and language, helping to deepen their appreciation of his work.
In English, we will use our class text The Land of Roar to inspire creative writing, with a focus on developing descriptive language, dialogue, and suspense. We will also study playscripts through our work on Shakespeare, learning how they are structured and performed. In addition, children will develop their non-fiction writing skills through the use of short animation clips, encouraging creativity and clarity in their writing.
In mathematics, children will build on their knowledge of division, including working with remainders. We will also cover statistics and graphs, telling the time, and calculating with money. Towards the end of the term, we will explore units of measure such as mass, volume, and length, before moving on to geometry and area and perimeter of shapes.
In science, children will study classification and taxonomy, learning how living things are grouped and identified. They will also explore animals and their habitats, developing a deeper understanding of how living things interact with their environments.
Homework will be set every Friday and should be completed and returned by Wednesday. Homework tasks are designed to reinforce learning from the classroom and regular completion of homework plays an important role in supporting children’s progress. I will be running a homework club on Tuesday lunchtime for any children who need support or who are finding it tricky to complete tasks at home.
Practising rapid recall of times tables at home is essential for building confidence and fluency in maths. Quick recall supports many areas of learning, including multiplication, division, fractions, and problem-solving. Children should practise regularly using resources such as Times Tables Rock Stars, the Mathsframe MTC website, or the flashcards that were previously sent home. Frequent, short practice sessions can make a significant difference in helping children recall facts quickly and accurately.
Reading at home remains a key priority. Children are expected to read at least five times a week and record this in their reading diary. Reading diaries are checked weekly on Mondays, and regular reading at home makes a significant difference to confidence and progress across the curriculum.
PE lessons will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Children should come to school dressed in appropriate PE kit suitable for the weather. This includes plain blue or black jumpers or hoodies with no logos, plain T-Shirts in house colours, as well as suitable footwear for physical activity. If shorts are worn, they should be of an appropriate length and suitable for a PE session. For safety reasons, all earrings must be removed on PE days.
